Enugu – The Police in Enugu State has embarked on a community sensitization programme aimed at checking all forms of crime in the area during the Christmas season.
Mr Ebere Amaraizu, the Public Relations Officer of the state command of the Police, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Enugu.
Amaraizu said that in furtherance of its determination to actualise a crime-free festive period, the command’s top officers had met with traditional rulers, various Divisional Police Officers and Crime Officers as well as journalists in the state.
“We decided before now to embark on what is known as community sensitization programme by way of community relations.
“This community relations anchored on community sensitization arrangement of the command was geared towards sensitizing the communities, putting them in touch with our vision and mission of actualizing a crime-free yuletide season.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
“Because we know that in yuletide, a lot of people will come from far and near to see their loved ones, to celebrate with them, hold meetings and all that.
“Now, it is going to happen in the community; by the way, if you get it right from the community and your environment the entire state will be safe and the entire country will also be safe.
“So, that is why emphasis was laid on this community safety and security actualized through community sensitization initiatives.
“Now, we held meetings with the traditional rulers; we also connected with journalists because there is nothing we are doing without the involvement of journalists.’’
The police spokesman also told NAN that the command had given out its distress call numbers and numbers of its principal officers to the public.
He added that the command had provided members of the public with social networking websites such as Facebook, email, and twitter to enable them to post information for public consumption and receive same.
“We also use every avenue and meeting to lecture people on security tips such as the need for them to be alert to happenings within their environments and the need to report any suspicious object, movement, or characters around them.
“We want them to know that we are policing with them and everybody is involved in the business of fighting crime by giving prompt information to the Police and other security agencies.’’ (NAN)
