The police in Edo State have arrested two suspected members of armed robbery gang who were said to have killed a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during a robbery operation at Muritala Muhammed Way in Benin, the state capital.
The late corps member, identified as David Onyeasina, was said to have been shot by the gang after robbing a shop around Edo College, the school said to be the place of primary assignment of the victim.
It was gathered that late Onyeasina, a 21-year-old graduate of Fine and Applied Arts from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho in Oyo State, had gone to buy a recharge card when he was felled by the armed robbers.
The police public relations officer, DSP Stephen Onwochei, said that the two suspects, Mathias Efe and Dominus Aisabodo, who were arrested shortly after the incident, had confessed that their victim was killed during a sporadic shootout as they attempted to escape after the operation.
According to Onwochei, items recovered from the two arrested suspects include two cut-to-size guns, nine live cartridges, 10 mobile handsets and jewellery belonging to their victims.
While assuring that the command would arrest other fleeing members of the gang, the police spokesperson, called on the public to assist the command. (Leadership)
