Warri (Delta)- Mr Ghana Akpodiete, Head of Department (Environment), Warri South Local Government Area of Delta, said poor logistics and lack of dump sites were hampering wastes disposal in the area.
Akpodiete said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Warri.
He said that most of the trucks used in evacuating refuse were in bad shape and needed repairs or replacement to enhance the operation of the department.
He also said that lack of dump sites in Warri had compelled the operatives to move wastes generated in the city to a spot along Sapele road.
”Sometimes the truck gets spoilt on the way, thereby affecting our performance,” the head of department said.
Akpodiete appealed to the state government to provide equipment and dump sites within Warri.
He, however, said that in spite of the challenges, sanitation had improved in Warri following the involvement of the private sector through the World Bank-assisted State Employment and Expenditure for Result (SEEFOR) project.
He said that under SEFFOR every household was expected to register with the private sector participants and pay between N200 and N500 monthly for evacuation of wastes.(NAN)
