LAGOS – The Nigeria Powerlifting Federation on Friday said it would seek affliation to the National Sports Commission (NSC) to provide the needed recognition for the sport to thrive.
Abdulazeez Alli, President of the federation told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that such move would also raise the prifile of the game.
“One of our objectives in 2015 is to be under the national sports commission as an affiliated member of the body.
“Our affiliation with NSC no doubt will bring more progress to powerlifting and also provide an enabling platform to increase the profile of the sport in the country.
“We also want to enjoy what other sports are benefitting from NSC,’’ he said.
Alli said that the NPF was already working to meet the set requirements for the affliation.
“We have already started doing our underground work to actualise what we want to achieve,’’ he said.
The president added that effort would be made to intensify seek for sponsors in order to engage its athletes in regular competitions.
“Getting sponsors for some of our programmes has always been a major concern, so we want to re-strategise and see other ways we can attract sponsors.
“We have written proposals to some organisations this year so that they can include us in their budget for 2015 and we are hopeful we will get good responses,’’ Alli said. (NAN)
