NSUKKA – Prof. Martins Aisien, National President, Parasitological Public Society of Nigeria (PPSN), on Tuesday called on Nigerians to observe personal hygiene and keep clean environment to prevent communicable diseases.
Aisien made the call in Nsukka, Enugu State, at the 38th Annual Conference of the society held at University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
He said that simple washing of hands before eating and keeping clean environment would help to prevent and spread of some diseases.
“Nigerians will be free from some diseases if they will learn how to observe personal hygiene which enhance healthy living
“Government should put measures in place to sensitise people, especially rural dwellers on how to live in clean environment, wash hands before eating as well as stop defecating inside the bush.
“We can save money spend on drugs as well as avoid some avoidable deaths if we imbibe good hygiene,’’ he said.
The Vice-Chancellor of university, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, commended the society for choosing the institution as the venue of the conference. [eap_ad_1] Ozumba urged it to come out with research findings that would help to improve the health of Nigerians, especially the rural areas.
“We should educate our people on ways of achieving good hygiene to prevent contacting of diseases so as to boost health care.
“Participants should look around and see how to contribute to the ongoing projects as a way of contributing their quota to the infrastructural development in the university,’’ Ozumba said.
Earlier, Chairman, Local Organising Committee, Prof. Fabian Okafor, said the objective of PPSN was in line with President Goodluck Jonathan’s agenda as it concerned health care.
“It is commendable that National Transformation Agenda has made health accessible as well as a priority.
“It is undisputable that PPSN has serious role to play in achieving national transformation as it concerns health.
“The committee is happy to all who contributed in one capacity or the other to make this conference a success,’’ he said. (NAN)
