Lagos – The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, has urged Muslims to use the fasting period to pray for continuous peace and unity of the country.
Martin who made the call in his 2016 Ramadan message, urged Muslims to use this period of Ramadan to dispel the misconception of some who use the name of the religion to perpetuate violence.
“I want to salute my Muslim brothers and sisters as they commence the Ramadan period.
“I pray that they have a successful fasting and wish that this period will usher in lasting peace and togetherness in our country.
“I also want to call on all Muslims to use the period to pray earnestly for our country in this trying period so that we can get over these difficult times we are in,” he said.
Martins condemned the recent incident in Kano where a woman was murdered for alleged ‘blasphemy’ against Islam.
He said it was sad that some miscreants have made it a norm to perpetuate havoc in the name of the religion which preaches peace and togetherness.
He called on Islamic clerics to use their exalted position to preach peace amongst their adherents and condemn all forms of religious violence and extremism.(NAN)
