The supporters of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), have taken a swipe at the Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on New Media, Reno Omokri, over his tweet, that called for a debate between Jonathan and Buhari before the March 28 presidential election.
Omokri’s tweet, “Debates expose the intellectual capacity of a candidate. President Jonathan is physically and mentally ready to debate. #Whoisafraidtodebate?” was greeted with criticism as many followers of Buhari, argued that there is no need for a debate but action.

It will be recalled that while the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has maintained that President Jonathan is ready to attend any debate, even if the debate is organsied by APC and moderated by Lai Mohammed (APC’s spokesman); the APC, has maintained that its candidate, Buhari will not participate in the ongoing public debates organised by the Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG). It alleged that the NEDG, co-ordinating the debate, was fraught with fundamental errors from the outset. Buhari also opted out of the NPAN-CHANNELS Television-organised debate on similar reasons.
In 2011, three major opposition presidential candidates, namely Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau of the ANPP (All Nigerian Peoples Party), Muhammadu Buhari of the CPC(Congress for Progressive Change) and Nuhu Ribadu of the ACN(Action Congress of Nigeria) boycotted the NEDG-organised March 29 presidential debate while President Jonathan did not honour the debate organised by the the management of satellite television channel, NN24.
