Abuja – Mr Edward Asuelimen, Chairman of Catholic Charismatic Renewal of Nigeria, Abuja Archdiocese, has called on Christians to be united in preaching the gospel rather than establishing churches indiscriminately.
Asuelimen made this call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.
He said Christians should work toward the unity of the church rather than dividing the body of Christ, which is His church on earth.
“Proliferation of churches is not from God. I mean, what I am saying. You don’t need to establish a church to have your ministry fulfilled.
“The reason is that some people take it for business; they want to own a church. A man can’t own a church, the church belong to God.
“Somebody leave Catholic Church today, he wants to start his own church, say God Glory Church and five of them moved there. The five of them within five year have opened five different churches.
“What is the vision that they are pursing that they can’t stay together? I know it takes a lot of discipline to stay under authority,” he said.
He expressed dismay over the idea of segregating the gospel for prosperity sake, noting that there is no place in the Bible where you will find such idea.
“Find out in the Bible where Jesus called people to only preach prosperity rather He called His disciples to preach the gospel of salvation.’’
The chairman, however, urged ministers to check the motive behind establishing a church whether it is genuine and biblical or not.
He said that this trend has also entered the Catholic Church where people talk of having private ministries instead of working together to grow the Church.
“The proliferation of churches has not helped us at all.
“Listen to the Christian airwaves, the messages you are hearing and ask yourselves if that it is gospel of Christ.
“Most of them are mere motivational speakers; it is different from preaching the good news.
“Jesus says how do you know them? By their fruit, you shall know them. So, we have motivational speakers, we have motivational Churches.
“We don’t have many Churches preaching the Gospel of Christ and the Bible says this Gospel must be preached.
“Fine, what is the Gospel – that men must come out of darkness to light,’’ he said.
Asuelimen, however, advised Catholics Christians that have established their private ministries to check their lives, saying “if all we live for is for this world, we are most miserable men,’’ quoting St. Paul.
“The reason why we are Christians is to live a life of Christ and obtain a crown of righteousness.
“ If you forget the crown of righteousness in whatever you are doing, then you have missed it because ministry can make a man and ministry can destroy a man.
“This is the mission. It is good you function within this structure in the church of God,’’ he said.
