P/HARCOURT (Sundiata Post) – A reporter for Channels Television, Deborah Agbalam was attacked and intimidated by thugs on Wednesday while covering the #EndBadGovernance protest in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to reports, the miscreants who converged at the Federal Secretariat violently threatened those demonstrating, dispersing them in the process.
Eyewitnesses revealed that before Agbalam’s arrival, two persons had been assaulted despite the presence of police officers.
Agbalam was threatened as the thugs reportedly boasted that they were there to prevent the protest from taking place.
Commenting on the ugly incident, Channels Television said, “Our correspondent was also surrounded and threatened by the thugs, who stated they were there to ensure no protest would take place today.”
The inaction of 12 police officers who were present when the incident took place raised security concerns and the protection of the right to protest in the state.
Reacting to the development, Rivers State Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu expressed concern and vowed to ensure that an investigation takes place.
“We will ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences,” he stated.
