In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, Mr Emem Samuel, the Deputy Postmaster-General, Counter Operation, said some capital projects were being done by the service alone.

“NIPOST is a government-owned responsible for providing postal services in Nigeria; so, the capital intensive infrastructure should not be left for it to manage.

“We need capital investments from the Federal Government to upgrade NIPOST as this will attract investors to invest in the service.

“Britain drives the Royal Mail to its present enviable position and the British government is still investing in it because of the importance of postal service as employer of labour.

“It is important for our government to do the same as the job is labour intensive and investing in the service will reduce unemployment,’’ he said. [eap_ad_1] He further appealed to the Federal Government not to neglect NIPOST in funding some its basic needs.

Nonetheless, Mr Irmiya Kulawe, the General Manager, Research and Quality Assurance, Counters Division, in a separate interview, said the service had mapped out strategies that could generate more revenue.

According to him, one of such strategies is to implement more of the aspects the Stamp Duties Act which empowers the service to generate revenue.

He said NIPOST would organise a summit to educate the public on Stamp Duties Act and its provisions between Aug. 19 and Aug. 20 in Abuja.

Kulawe said the summit would sustain advocacy on the enforcement of the provisions of the Act as applicable to NIPOST.

He said the summit also would create awareness on the need for all transactions above N1, 000 to be authenticated with a N5 postage stamp.

He said stakeholders from various sectors of the economy were expected to participate in the summit. (NAN)
