Paris-Saint Germain was crowned champions of the French League on Wednesday night, despite their 2-1 loss to mid-table Rennes.
Laurent Blanc’s side was announced as winner of Ligue 1 shortly before kick-off after hearing that closest rivals Monaco had drawn their fixture with Guingamp earlier in the evening, leaving PSG with an unassailable lead at the top.
And their French coach was delighted at having secured the title, despite their loss on the night.
“We are very happy tonight, even if we would have preferred to celebrate with a win,” Blanc told his club’s official website.
“I think we will do that here against Montpellier, but it’s a reward for ten months hard work.
The manager said his side’s season is not yet over however, as they eye a new French record.
“Now we really want to beat the record for the most points in a single season (83 points) so we will try and do that in the next two matches because this team deserves to beat records,” he revealed.
Leading goal-scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who came on as a substitute in the loss after a lengthy injury lay-off, was ecstatic with yet another League trophy to add to his enviable collection.
“Finally, it’s done!” said the Swede. “The season was very long and now we have reached another of our objectives.
“We have had a superb season and we are all very happy this evening.”
Former Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye, who signed for the French giants in January, was pleased at winning a title in his first five months at the club.
“I signed here in Paris to win titles,” said the 28-year-old.
“No, we didn’t win this evening, but a championship rewards consistency and all the hard work over the whole season.
“The club has defended its title and we need to keep working hard to keep even longer.” (kickoggnigeria)
