KANO – Kano residents on Monday began cleaning drains around their homes in preparation for onset of the 2014 rainy season
Some of the residents told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano that they embarked on the exercise to prevent the kind of flooding they had witnessed in the past year.
Malam Adam Abdallah of Fagge quarters of the state said that the residents had a bitter flooding experience in the area in 2013 and had vowed to avoid a recurrence this year.
Malam Sabo Halilu, another resident of the area, also said that they had to evacuate the dirt in the drains to ensure smooth water passage.
“We have all learnt our mistakes from last year’s disaster, so with mass advocacy from the government, people have been awakened to clear drains before the rains begin.”
While some residents called the attention of the state Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) to evacuate the dirt, some left it close to the water ways, an act which experts said would send the dirt to the drains again.
Alhaji Muhammad Badawi, the Permanent Secretary, state Ministry of Environment, however, called on the residents to call the attention of the board for proper disposal of the waste whenever they cleared the drains.
Parts of the state witnessed flood during the 2013 rainy season, leaving several people homeless. (NAN)
