In a recent development, the Federal Government has greenlit a significant salary boost for civil servants and pensioners across various Consolidated Salary Structures. Mr. Emmanuel Njoku, Head of Press at the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), disclosed this information on Tuesday in Abuja.
“The Federal Government has sanctioned a salary increase ranging from 25 per cent to 35 per cent for Civil Servants on the remaining six Consolidated Salary Structures,” Njoku stated. These structures include the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS), and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS). The salary increments are scheduled to come into effect from January 1.”
Njoku further revealed that the government has also approved a pension increase ranging from 20 per cent to 28 per cent for pensioners under the Defined Benefits Scheme, aligned with the aforementioned consolidated salary structures, and set to commence from January 1.
This decision aligns with the provisions outlined in Section 173(3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring fair remuneration for its workforce and retirees.
Njoku highlighted that previously, salary increases had been implemented in the Tertiary Education and Health Sectors. This encompassed structures such as the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS), Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS), Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS), Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS), Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), and Consolidated Health Sector Salary Structure (CONHESS).
With these recent approvals, the government aims to enhance the welfare of civil servants and pensioners, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the nation’s development.

Paltry increment of minimum wage is not and should not be the solution, since there are other economic parameters for the government in power to tune.
The percentage increase in the cost of essentially needs of the workers should be compared with the pronounced 25 percent. With the happening, the state of poverty and insecurity will be alarming.
