Calabar – A lawmaker, Mr Hilary Bisong, has called on the Federal Government to collaborate with the state and local governments on food production to avert impending hunger.
Bisong, who represents (PDP-Boki II State Constituency) in Cross Rivers House of Assembly, made the suggestion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar on Sunday.
According to him, massive food production in the country will put food on the tables of many Nigerians.
He expressed regrets that at the moment some people were unable to provide adequate food for their families.
The lawmaker advised the three tiers of governments to resort to agriculture as a recipe for the economic challenges confronting the country.
“The current economic recession calls for a serious concern; Nigeria is richly blessed with fertile lands for agricultural products to thrive.
“As a way to cushion the hardship, I am calling on the Federal Government to collaborate with the state and local governments with a view to investing massively in the agricultural sector to boost food production.
“The Federal Government should open up the agricultural sector by way of providing funds for farmers, supporting the growth of enterprise.
“We cannot continue to depend only on oil for our national revenue; the agricultural sector is the only alternative for now,” he said.
The lawmaker expressed confidence that the country’s economy would bounce again, saying that what the country needed was the right policies to attract foreign investors.
