Abuja (Sundiata Post) – The House of Representatives on Thursday in plenary urged the Ministry of Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, (FERMA) to complete the reconstruction of Ugwuonyeama 9th Mile Road, Enugu to avert its total collapse.
This followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Honourable Chimobi Sam Atu, of Labour Party representing Enugu North/South Federal Constituency of Enugu State.
The House also urged the Ministry of Environment and other relevant agencies to take a holistic and systematic aporoach in containing the gully erosion menace in Enugu North/South Federal Constituency.
It also resolved that the the joint Committees on Environment, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, (FERMA) and Works when constituted should undertake proper investigation of the threat posed by gully erosion along Ugwuonyeama Road 9th Mile and recommend lasting solution to the menace.
Honourable Chimaobi Sam Atu, a Labour Party Parliamentarian had in his lead debate stressed that, “the ravaging effect caused by gully erosion on the Ugwuonyeama 9th Mile Road in Enugu North Local government and part of Udi Local Government is threatening.”
Accordung to him, “Ugwuonyeama 9th Mile Road has remained a death trap resulting to loss of lives, goods and services worth millions of naira on a daily basis as a result of frequent accidents on the bad portions of the road which has not been completed”.
He further observed that the strategic importance of the road to the economy of Southeastern states in particular and the country at large could not be overemphasised as it provides access for the citizens to market their agricultural produce to many neighbouring States.
