ABUJA – The House of Representatives on Tuesday declared the Minister of Agriculture, Dr Akinwumi Adesina as the `best and suitable’ candidate for the next President of African Development Bank (AfDB).
In a motion moved by Rep. Munir Agundi (Kano-APC) and unanimously adopted by the lawmakers, the House said that Adesina’ qualifications and working experience in Francophone and Anglophone countries stand him out for the job.
He urged the Presidency and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to support Adesina’s bid to become the next President of the continental financial institution.
He said that it was through the AfDB that the problems of inequalities, poverty and unemployment could be addressed in Africa.
Agundi argued that if given the opportunity to lead the pan African bank, Adesina would use his wealth of experience to introduce and implement policies at eradicating poverty in the continent.
“ Adesina’s tremendous passion to help eradicate poverty through reduction of unemployment among the youth is one of the reasons that make him the best candidate for the position,’’ he said.
