Abuja – The House of Representatives has called on the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing to reconstruct Yahe-Ukelle Igede road linking Cross River with Benue to ease the suffering of motorists on the route.
The call stemmed from o motion on Wednesday by Rep. Agom Jarigbe (Cross River-PDP).
Moving the motion, Jarigbe said that the road from Yahe through Ukelle in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River to Igede in Oju Local Government Area of Benue was in a bad state.
“The road is a single lane which is plagued by severe gully erosion that has eaten deep into the road, which is also riddled with potholes.
“As a result, commuters are usually stranded for several hours or days whenever their vehicles break down on the road,” he said.
The lawmaker expressed concern that the deplorable state of the road was adversely affecting commercial activities between people of the two states, adding that the road had become unsafe for motorists and commuters.

He said that about 90 per cent of the inhabitants along the road were local farmers.
According to him, the farmers depended solely on the sale of agricultural produce for survival but their livelihood is now threatened by the deplorable state of the road as they can no longer convey their goods.
The house unanimously supported the motion and the matter was referred to its Committee on Works. (NAN)
