Abuja – The House of Representatives has urged the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) to review its regulatory and monitoring policies to check noise pollution in the country.
This followed a motion on “Need to Control Noise Pollution in Nigeria” moved by Rep. Hassan Saleh (Benue-PDP) on Wednesday at plenary.
Saleh decried the rising level of noise pollution in the country, especially in urban and semi-urban cities, adding that it was having serious impact on the health of the citizens.
He explained that the Nigerian Hearing and Speech Association (NIHSA) had linked the growing hearing difficulties being experienced by Nigerians to noise pollution.
The lawmaker expressed worry that in spite of the existence of NESREA, the level of noise pollution had become worrisome as it kept creating increasing environmental hazards to the health of the citizenry.
The House unanimously adopted the motion through a voice vote, and mandated its Committee on Environment and Habitat to interface with relevant stakeholders on how to develop a comprehensive noise pollution abatement policy.
The committee was given six weeks to report back to the house. (NAN)
