In a tragic incident on Thursday evening, armed herdsmen launched an attack on the Wandor, Mbaikyor community in Benue State, resulting in the reported death of 16 individuals, including a retired Nigerian Army officer, MWO Mbatsavbun Gbatar.
The assailants, numbering about 40, reportedly burned over 50 houses, farmlands, and food barns across 11 settlements during the three-hour-long assault.
The survivor, who spoke anonymously, pointed to a Fulani settlement’s involvement, emphasizing previous arrests linked to the same group. Despite prior documentation and arrests, the attackers acted with impunity.
Gwer East LGA officials confirmed 16 casualties and two injuries, attributing the violence to suspected armed herdsmen. The Masev Development Association expressed shock and lamented the recurrent attacks, urging government intervention, security mobilization, and assistance for the affected Wandor community.
The statement questioned the ongoing vulnerability of citizens and called for decisive action to end such atrocities.
