Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Following the improvement recorded by way of remittances into government coffers by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) from N5billion in 2016 to N7billion in 2017, the Senate has tasked the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) to work hard and improve on their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
The Senate alleged that the feat achieved by JAMB may not be unconnected with the blocking of leakage channels by the examination body, called on the other two examination bodies to ensure that they improve their IGR remittance to the government. Adding that WAEC and NECO should be able to surpass that of JAMB since they enjoy greater number of candidates’ patronage.
Senator Representing Kogi West Senatorial district at the National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye while drawing the attention of the Senate to the issue, informed that JAMB which used to remit between N50million to N70million to Federation Account has improved from N5billion Remittance in 2016 to N7billion in 2017.
According to him, “Since JAMB has shown that it can remit N7 billion, we can then encourage our relevant committees to work on NECO and WAEC that have bigger participation to come up with wider financial status.”
Dino continued: “We can make more money as a people and country, if there is proper oversight and if the corruption pipes in those two places are blocked.
President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki thereafter mandated the Chairman, Senate Committee on Education (Basic and Secondary) Sen. Aliyu Wamakko to look into the matter and report back to the senate next week.
