Rivers LG Medical Workers Withdraw Case

Abuja  –   Some local government chapters of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN)in Rivers on Monday withdrew their suit against the union’s state council instituted in 2015.

The union’s branches at Andoni, Ahoada East, Gokana and Degema Local Government Areas had filed the suit against the state council, contesting their leadership and voting rights.

Also joined in the suit instituted at the National Industrial Court were some members of the union and the Nigeria Labour Congress, Rivers Council.

Issues at in contention were leadership tenure, election of new executive members, alleged ill treatment of primary healthcare workers and the rights of grassroots unions to vote and be voted for.

At the resumed hearing of the case in Abuja on Monday, counsel for the contending parties expressed his clients’ intention to discontinue with the suit, claiming that union’s national body would settle their grievances.

He prayed the court to honour the notice of withdrawal of the suit, insisting that their differences would be settled internally.

The Judge and President of the court, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, while striking out the case, commended the counsel for towing the path of arbitration and reconciliation.

He said that the court encouraged amicable settlement of disputes and would facilitate same in the interest of justice, equity and fair play.
