The Nsukka Unit Commander of the FRSC, Mr John Eneze, said on Thursday that there were more road crashes during the “ember’’ months due to human and mechanical errors.
Eneze said at a safety campaign in Ibagwa-Aka, Igboeze South Local Government Area in Enugu State that contrary to superstitions that the period was controlled by some spiritual forces, the crashes stemmed from human error and mechanical faults.
He said the months were like other months of the year but that the crashes occurred due to the impatience of commercial transporters to make fast money for the Christmas celebration.
“The rush to make money during this season makes many road users to throw caution to the wind and drive with bad brake system and worn-out tyres.
“Ember months are not responsible for reckless driving but the drivers and their vehicles are,” he said.
He warned drivers against drinking alcohol before hitting the road, and to ensure that their vehicles were in good functional state.
He told them to ensure the use of their seatbelt while motorcyclists should put on their crash helmets to reduce the level of injury when accident occurred.
He also warned them against over-speeding while pointing out that Christmas was celebrated every year and only for the living.
In a remark, the Chairman of the local government, Mr Festus Ozioko, commended the FRSC for its commitment which had led to the reduction of the accident rate in the area.
He said the local government would liaise with the FRSC to organise a seminar for its drivers, motorcycle riders and tricycle riders in the locality to enlighten them on the importance of safety on the roads.
