Jos, – Rotary Club of Jos Central, District 9125, on Wednesday donated 2, 600 books to indigent pupils of LEA Primary School, Kwak in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau.
President of the club, Ms Sele Pam, said the donation was to mark the Rotary Basic Education and Literary Month, observed every September by the club worldwide.
She noted that such pupils perform poorly in school because they lacked the necessary books to access knowledge due to poverty.
“ We are a humanitarian club committed to touching lives positively through our talent, resources and our time.
“We are donating 2,600 books here, five cartoons of chalk, 31 packs of pencils, five packs of biros amongst other items.
“ I am happy to give back to this school which I once attended and implore the children to work hard to become great persons in life,“ Pam said.
In his remarks, the District Head of Hwak, Da Pwajok Dangol, commended Rotary for the gesture, saying education was necessary in empowering such pupils break the shackles of poverty and chart a better future for themselves.
He advised the pupils to perform well in all subjects and other extra-curricular activities, so as to encourage the club and others to support them the more.
The district head admonished teachers to desist from sending away pupils from school without notifying parents in view of the security situation in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the donation was supported by Boggos Foundation, Jos and Ochuko Foundation.
The excited children sang and recited poems to celebrate the event.
A beneficiary, Master Daniel Gyang said he had been using only two exercise books for all subjects because his mother, who is a widow, lack the means to buy more.
