Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has spoken out about the ongoing conflict between Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara.
In a video seen by Politics Nigeria, Amaechi claimed that the main reason for the dispute between Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and the suspended Rivers State governor is a disagreement over the sharing of funds.
He urged both parties to be transparent and explain to Nigerians the true cause of their fallout.
“Okay, so the fight between the former governor of Rivers State – the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the current governor is about sharing money.
“If not, what’s the quarrel? The truth is that Nigerians don’t dislike corruption anymore because I’ve not seen anybody on the streets protesting about what the issue really is.
“If not, can both of them come to the public and tell us what the quarrel is about?” Amaechi asked.
Commenting on Fubara’s suspension and the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, Amaechi said democracy is under threat.
He added that the people of Rivers State have been denied the right to experience true democracy due to the president’s actions.
“And then, we are now denied democracy, so Rivers State is the only state in the country that can’t practice democracy.
“They’ve imposed a military rule on us. Secondly, the president acted outside the Constitution. Section 188 of the Constitution states how a governor can leave office – either by death, resignation, or impeachment.
“It (the Constitution) didn’t say that one day you’ll wake up and one man called the president of Nigeria will throw you out of office,” he said.
Amaechi concluded by saying that President Tinubu’s handling of the political crisis in Rivers State threatens the stability of Nigeria’s democracy.
