LAGOS – The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) on Saturday began a week-long camping, ahead of a continental championship in Zimbabwe, later in the month.
Tunji Fasimoye, the NRFF Technical Director, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after the team’s first training session in Lagos, that they would display class in Zimbabwe.
He said that the squad included Lasisi Kazeem, Olanrewaju Azeez and Salihu Abdulmalik, all from the Nigeria Police.
Others are: Oduntan Olatunji, Christian Ogar, John Oladele, Ayinla Hafis and Azeez Ladipo, from the Cowrie RFC, as well as Peter Ambrose from Plateau Tigers.
Also on the team are: Abubakar Sadam of Zaria RFC and Samaila Agwam of Hamilton RFC from South Africa.
Lawal Saulawa of Abuja RFC; Kelechi Anozie of Hawkster Athletics RFC and Monday Alex of Racing RFC also made the list.
“I am excited over the selection of one foreign-based player and eleven home-grown players, ahead of the Africa Rugby 7’s.
“We are really delighted that we have talents from local teams to represent Nigeria at the championship,’’ Fasimoye said.
According to him, picking the team from the just-concluded Independence 7’s tournament is an indication that talents abound locally.
He said that the invitation of Kelechi Anozie and Monday Alex was aimed at incorporating young players into the camp to enable them learn.
Fasimoye said that Bamidele Coker remained the Technical Adviser of the NRFF.
He, however, explained that the need for an advance game pattern necessitated the appointment of Fabian Juries, a South African, for the team. (NAN)
