Cologne (Germany) – Four Russian football fans on Friday were given suspended sentences after attacking tourists in the western German city of Cologne in June, the local court reported.
The men, age 26 to 30, had pleaded guilty to assaulting three Spanish tourists’ two men and a woman who had been handing out flyers for a left-wing political movement near Cologne cathedral.
The court in Cologne sentenced one defendant to a year on probation and the other three to 10 months.
Proceedings against an additional defendant, the only one who challenged the accusations, would take place separately in August.
Another fan who had been involved was released shortly after the six men were first arrested in June.
Investigators have said that the six Russian fans were part of a right-wing extremist group and were passing through Germany on their way back to Russia after attending Euro 2016 matches in France. (dpa/NAN)
