KADUNA – An environmentalist in Kaduna, Malam Shehu Ahmed, on Friday called for support to environmental regulators to improve sanitation in the state.
Ahmed, a lecturer with the Department of Environmental Studies, Kaduna State University, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna.
He said that enforcing environmental regulations would ensure a healthy society and promote safety standards in the country.
“Protection of the ecosystem can only be achieved through effective regulation.
“The environment needs to be protected from the influence of human beings on nature which has negative effects on the ecosystem.
“Where the ecosystem is impacted as a result of pollution, the food chain becomes disrupted, thus affecting the socio-economic and health of the citizenry.
“We don’t want people to suffer when there is health crisis and even shortage of food supply in the country.
“Enforcement officers should identify polluting industrial facilities and ensure they operate within the ambit of the law, to protect human health and the environment.’’
He commended environmental agencies for sensitising the public by establishing clubs in schools, to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
The environmentalist also urged the government to encourage and empower regulators to protect the environment and human health from environmental hazards. (NAN)
