UNITED NATIONS – The United Nations Security Council said it had become necessary to bring perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of terrorism to justice.
The council made the remark in a statement in New York condemning the Christmas Day attack on the Halane Base Camp of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the attack was perpetrated by Al Shabaab, in which many people, including three Mission’s soldiers and a contractor were killed.
The council extended its condolences to the families of the victims, to AMISOM and to the people and Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
It said it deplored Al Shabaab’s actions against a base of AMISOM, adding that the base “is working alongside the Government of Somalia and the Somali National Army, to protect the Somali people and to assist in the reconstruction and stabilisation of that country.
The council commended the swift response of AMISOM and members of the Somali National Security Forces to the attack.
The council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, constituted one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.
It stated that any act of terrorism is criminal and unjustifiable regardless of its motivation, wherever and whenever and by whosoever committed.
The members of the council reiterated their determination to combat all forms of terrorism, in accordance with their responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations.
It also urged all states, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Somali authorities in this regard.
The council reminded states that they must ensure that measures taken to combat terrorism complied with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law. (NAN
