LAGOS – Security experts and residents in Lagos on Friday commended the Federal Government over the ceasefire agreement with the Boko Haram sect.
Some of them who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) commended the Federal Government for its effort in curbing insurgency in the country.
Mr Wilson Esangbedo, an executive of National Institute of Industrial Security, commended the move and expressed hope that the Boko Haram sect would honour its word.
“We just hope the sect will keep to the agreement and ceasefire.
“Let us wait and see the outcome of the agreement, I hope it will be positive,” he said.
Mr Samson Duru, a retired police officer also commended the Federal Government for its efforts to curb insurgency in the country.
“I am happy that government has entered into an agreement with the Boko Haram sect.
“This is to show that the government has not relented in the fight against insurgency and also securing the release of the Chibok girls,” he said.
Duru, however, said that he hoped the sect would keep to the agreement, urging the government not to relent in its efforts to improve security in the country.
Mr Samuel Adedeji, also a retired police personnel, told NAN that although securing the release of the girls was getting late, the government must be commended for its efforts in tackling the menace.
“We are happy to hear that an agreement has been signed to cease fire.
“We hope the Boko Haram sect will fulfil their part of the agreement,” he said.
Mr Rasheed Bello, a resident, commended the government’s effort in tackling insurgency and said the ceasefire agreement was a wise decision to make.
“Reaching an agreement with the Boko Haram sect was the wisest decision the Federal Government could have made in solving the menace in the country,” he said.
Mrs Toyin Subair, another resident, also said the Federal Government should be commended for their efforts in curbing insurgency in the country.
“Although, securing the release of the Chibok girl is still in progress, I will also commend them for their efforts in putting an end to insurgency and signing an agreement to release the girls,” she said.
In his reaction, the Spokesman for the Pro National Conference (PRONACO) Mr Wale Okuniyi, also described the ceasefire as a welcome development.
“If it is genuine and can afford Nigeria to work out sustainable stability, then it must be supported” Okuniyi said.
He, however, expressed worry that the sect had made similar promises but had reneged in the past.
“Our advice is for the military to tread with caution” he said
A lawmaker, Mr Bisi Yusuf, (APC-Alimosho I) commended the new development and urged the government to negotiate properly for the safe release of the abducted school girls.
Yusuf the Chairman, House Committee on Transportation, Commerce and Industry said if the negotiation had been done before now it would have saved many innocent lives from untimely death.
