Umuahia –  The traditional ruler of Avodim in Umuahia South Local Government Area, Eze Chidi Onyemachi, on Tuesday said that security played a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of any society.

Onyemachi made the assertion in Avodim at a Town Hall meeting organised to address the security challenges facing the community.

He said that the recent spate of criminal activities in the area had necessitated moves by the community leaders to set up a vigilante group.

The traditional ruler said that the importance of security could not be over emphasised and the traditional ruling council of the community had taken steps to ensure safety of lives and property.

“We are in the last stage of fulfilling requirements needed for establishing a group that will keep watch over our community and provide security during ceremonies.

“And I will like to point out that only responsible persons who can provide guarantors will be admitted into the group,’’ Onyemachi said.

A member of the community’s ruling council, who pleaded anonymous said: “We want to rid our community of people soiling our image with their nefarious activities.

“And we will not hesitate to utilise the resources at our disposal to lawfully actualise it as we are poised to complement government’s efforts in combating crime.’’ (NAN)
