Five lawmakers led by Nse Ntuen as ‘Speaker’ abandoned an attempt to impeach Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, halfway into the project and scampered out of the House of Assembly complex, on Tuesday, as a group of young men, believed to be members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stormed the venue, with the governor.
The five lawmakers, loyal to former Governor, Godswill Akpabio, formally a staunch member of the PDP, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in August, after resigning as the Minority Leader of the Senate, had initially seized the assembly complex and announced the expulsion of 11 members including the Speaker, Onofiok Luke, ahead of impeachment proceedings against Emmanuel.
But the governor, who got wind of the move, stormed the House with his securitymen and some of his supporters, including some youths, who promptly charged the atmosphere, leading to the end of impeachment move.
On arrival of the governor, gunshots were fired into the air by the governor’s security and some people believed to be on the side of the five lawmakers, which further charged the venue, causing many people, including reporters, keeping vigil to scamper away, some, scaling the fence.
There were reports that thugs hired by the five lawmakers, whose seats were declared vacant after they were expelled by the Luke-led leadership, set some vehicles ablaze as the fled the scene.
