Abuja – The introduction of Hon. Segun Adekola Football Cup Competition is aimed at bringing youths in the Ekiti South Federal Constituency I together, a competition official said on Thursday in Abuja.
Toyin Ayoola, the competition’s Central Co-ordinator, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the event would also promote the football game among all the wards in the constituency.
He said this was responsible for the massive interest the youths have shown in participating in the competition which will begin this weekend.
“The maiden edition of the Hon. Segun Adekola Football Cup competition among all the wards in Ekiti South Federal Constituency One will kick off on Saturday at the constituency’s headquarters in Ikere-Ekiti.
“But it needs to be made clear to all that its essence is to bring youths in the constituency together and promote the football sport in the area.
“This is why we have had a massive response in terms of interest to participate. Already, we have had about 30 of the 32 wards in the constituency registering their teams.
“I can therefore say that we will have between 28 and 30 teams taking part in the competition in the long run,’’ he said, adding that the registration exercise had started on Nov. 23 and was to end on Thursday.
NAN reports that all the wards in the constituency had registered by collecting forms from their respective Local Government Co-ordinator.
Ayoola disclosed that the competition’s ceremonial kick-off would be performed by the Cup donor and competition sponsor, Segun Adekola who is the Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on Youths.

“As part of our preparations for the competition, a press conference on the competition had earlier been addressed by one of the sponsor’s close associates, Sanya Onibon.
“Onibon assured at the event that both the sponsor and organisers are hopeful of using the competition to showcase the rich potentials of Ekiti, especially in sports,’’ he said.(NAN)
