Yola – Sen. Abdul-Azeez Nyako (Adamawa Central Senatorial District) on Saturday distributed fertiliser and improved maize seedlings to farmers in his constituency.
Nyako said the gesture was to assist the farmers and complement government’s effort in boosting agriculture.
Nyako noted that agriculture was the mainstay of the state’s economy, adding that all hands must be on deck to mobilise and support the public, particularly the youths, to embrace it for gainful employment.
Nyako urged the 12,000 beneficiaries not to sell them but to maximally utilize them for the purpose intended in view of the present administration’s commitment to diversifying the economy through agriculture.
He said he was spurred to continue distributing seedlings and fertilizers following the positive responses he got from farmers who benefited from the gesture last year.
Nyako re-iterated his commitment to sustain the gesture.
“Many beneficiaries started calling me for seedlings early this year because of the benefits they derived last year”, he said.
Dr. Joseph Jaryum, agriculture consultant, promised to provide needed advice to farmers on utilizing the improved seedlings.
He said if properly utilized, the improved seedlings have the capacity to see them out of poverty.
One of the farmers, Malam Sulaiman Adamu, lauded Nyako and urged other politicians to emulate such gesture which he said had direct bearing on the people.
“I am a beneficiary of this gesture last cropping season and I harvested 100 bags. I used to get 20 bags.
“I thank you for this timely support and urge you to sustain the programme”, Adamu said. (NAN)
