ABUJA – The Senate President, Sen. David Mark, on Wednesday cautioned Nigerians on wrong use of Internet, saying it could be destructive.
Mark gave the advice while inaugurating the National Assembly office of Spectranet, an internet service provider, in Abuja.
The senate president, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Sen. Anthony Manzo, said in as much as the internet was important to every sphere of life, it should be used wisely.
“One of the successes of our democratic experiment is liberalisation of the economy, especially in internet connection.
“The internet has made the world a small village and information is available to the poor and rich alike but in the wrong hands, it can be used as a tool for destruction.
“So, let us use it wisely. Let us use the internet to gain knowledge, education and ensure national growth. Don’t use it to search for equipment that are used in making bombs,“ he said.
The senate president further encouraged the service provider to give Nigerians value for their money by providing good internet service.
He said the operation of the company in the country was a good development, as it would help provide job opportunities to unemployed Nigerians.
“Government alone cannot employ everybody. The support government gives to companies like Spectranet is what keeps the economy going.
“This is because it creates job opportunities, while the country benefits from the tax payment. I am happy to associate with your company and I hope it will grow,’’ he said.
Mark, who commended the company for not providing time bound internet services like other internet service providers, however, urged them to expand its scope and speed.
He also urged the company to reduce the cost of providing services to Nigerians, adding that “in the west, internet service is very cheap.“
Spectranet Chief Operation Officer, Mr Atul Ojha, said the company had obtained licence from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to provide internet services in the country.
Ojha said the company had been operating in Nigeria for over four years.
He said its service was equivalent to the best anywhere in the world.
“We are licensed by NCC and it is available in Lagos and Abuja and we are moving to other states soon.
“The penetration of internet, particularly our service, has direct link with literacy and economic growth of the country because we are taking steps to ensure that our service is available to all spectrum of people.
Ojha said eight centres had been opened in Abuja for easy access. (NAN)
