Senator Ireti Kingibe has called for an open and thorough investigation into the sexual harassment allegation made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In an official statement, Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the 10th Senate and chairs the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, expressed her readiness to champion the case when it is formally presented in the Senate.
She stated, “I assure Nigerians that I will be at the forefront of this case once it comes before the red chamber. My previous comments were not meant to undermine Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims but to clarify that I was initially unaware of the incident.”
Kingibe reaffirmed her stance against all forms of violence and harassment toward women and girls, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to combat such issues across all sectors of society.
“Sexual harassment and assault have unfortunately become common in workplaces and homes. Every Nigerian, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or religion, should be committed to ending this menace,” she said.
She stressed the importance of a transparent and fair investigation into the allegations, ensuring justice and fairness for all involved, regardless of status or gender.
“As Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, I am demanding an open, transparent, and fair investigation into the sexual harassment allegation. Justice and fairness must be provided for everyone, irrespective of social class or position,” Kingibe added.
Highlighting her commitment to gender inclusivity, Kingibe noted that she is advocating for the passage of the 35% Gender Inclusion Bill and pushing for the establishment of special seats for women in governance. She revealed that the Gender Equity Bill 2025 (SB 743) has already passed its first reading and is awaiting the second.
Kingibe dismissed claims suggesting she is indifferent to sexual harassment, urging the public to disregard such disinformation.
“As a leader and Senator, I will never undermine the trust of the people. I remain dedicated to ensuring justice, fairness, and equality in our democratic processes,” she stated.
She concluded by reaffirming her commitment to advocating for the rights of women and girls, promising to stay focused on delivering good governance for her constituents and the broader Nigerian society.
