BELGRADE – The dean of Serbia’s largest private university, Megatrend, agreed to resign on Friday after it was found out that the doctoral thesis he claimed to have written did not exist.
Mica Jovanovic confirmed to Serbian media that he would step down, but insisted that he did not lie and that he would travel to London to retrieve the thesis.
According to him, the thesis in which he claims has merely been lost.
A day earlier, Serbia’s Education Minister Srdjan Verbic said that authorities might launch criminal proceedings against Jovanovic.
The incident is the latest in a series of scandals involving disputed degrees claimed by leading politicians and businessmen in Serbia.
The selling diplomas to plagiarism allegations against Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic this month resulted in a trial leading to a verdict. (dpa/NAN)
