Abuja- Ariz Shehu and Chukwudiebere Duru emerged the joint best overall gymnast in the male category on Saturday in Abuja at the Tony International Gymnastics (TIG) Level System Championships.
Both Nigerians scored 18:35 points each to win the award.
Zimbabwe’s Zoe Chitewle won the best overall gymnast award in the female category with 22:00 points.
In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the end of the competition, the winners expressed joy at their victory.
“I am happy that I won today (Saturday). I always train in school and so it wasn’t difficult for me to win.
“I won three gold medals and one silver medal. So, I am very happy,’’ Chitewle said.
Duru, who won two gold medals, attributed his victory to his constant training.
“I have always trained hard and that is why I won today (Saturday). My coaches also helped me to achieve this success,’’ he said.
NAN reports that over 200 gymnasts participated in this year’s edition of the championship which is the fourth in the series.
The gymnasts in attendance were from five countries, namely Nigeria, the U.S., Germany, Zimbabwe and Senegal.
The female gymnasts competed in floor exercise, vault, beam and uneven bar, while the male counterparts competed in floor and vault only.(NAN)
