Following reports widely circulated by online media platforms that Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau has been killed in Konduga, Borno by Nigeria troops.
It will be recalled that Shekau announced in 2009 that he had taken over leadership of Boko Haram after the death of the founder, Mohammed Yusuf.
It was however reported in 2013 that Shekau was killed after a military raid on Sambisa forest. [eap_ad_1] But videos emerged each time debunking the reports.
A security source who spoke with the Cable said, “The real Shekau was killed on or about 19 June 2013 as the Nigerian government was concluding a peace deal with Boko Haram. He died in the Sambisa forest as a result of gunshot wounds he received in an encounter with the JTF.”
While other sources claimed he was assassinated by his lieutenants paving way for the alleged deceased to lay claim to the name, Abubakar Shekau.
While investigation into the true identity of Shekau continues, conflicting reports have emerged.
Saharareporters who claimed to have spoken with a Nigerian military intelligence source said the top Boko Haram figure killed in a recent operation was one Bashir Mohammed, leader of the Islamist sect’s Uye camp, quoting the source as saying Nigerian soldiers had killed Mr. Bashir last Friday in a fierce battle against Boko Haram insurgents in Konduga, Borno State.
While the Cable who also claimed to have been intimated by a source privy to the investigation, named the Boko Haram commander killed in Konduga, Borno State, by Nigerian soldiers last week as Isa Damsaka.
