Lagos – The Shippers Association Lagos State (SALS) on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to reduce customs tariffs to make Nigerian ports more competitive.
The President of the association, Mr Jonathan Nicol, made the plea at the Annual General Meeting of the association held in Lagos.
Nicol said customs tariffs should be reduced while government should also reverse the revenue target given to Nigeria Customs Service
.
He said government should enact laws that would simplify and enable clearance of cargo from the ports within 24 hours at moderate port charges.
“If tariffs are reduced and Warri port facilities are rehabilitated, this would curb unrest in Warri and its environs.
“We believe that government can derive more revenue on all imports as employment opportunities will be opened and millions of Nigerians will benefit.
“Exports from Nigeria should attract zero per cent and facilities for receiving export cargo should be upgraded,” Nicol said.
He said the national carrier would be useful in facilitating and receiving export cargo.
Nicol also said that refineries should be established across the South-South region to meet local fuel demands and exports.

He further advised that government should protect Nigerian shippers to sustain their businesses.
Nicol said that the United Nations had seen the challenges ahead of time and directed the establishment of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) primarily to checkmate the excesses of shipping lines and terminal operators.
He said the council was also established to regulate the activities of stakeholders in the maritime sector.
“We seek full regulatory powers and even ask for the upgrade of the shippers’ council to status of National Transport Commission in Nigeria,’’ he said. (NAN)
