Singaporean may face gallows for gunshot during escape attempt

Singapore – A Singaporean might face death penalty after being accused of discharging a firearm during an attempt to escape from police custody, a news report said.
Muhammad Iskandar bin Sa’at was charged in court on Monday with unlawful discharge of a firearm under the Arms Offences Act.
It said that the accused had been in remand for motor vehicle theft when he complained of chest pains and was taken to hospital on Saturday.
bin Sa’at allegedly attempted to escape custody while in an examination room and was stopped by a police officer.
According to a police statement, he snatched the officer’s revolver and fired.
The charge sheet produced in court said he had discharged three rounds from the gun “with intent to cause physical injury”.
A police officer was wounded in his thumb and foot, and is in a stable condition.
The news report said that if convicted under the Arms Offences Act, the mandatory punishment is death. (dpa/NAN)
