Johannesburg – Enugu State Union in South Africa, said on Friday that it trained four youths in skills acquisition in that country to keep them busy.
Its President, Mr Mike Ugwu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Johannesburg, South Africa, that the aim was to prevent Enugu youths in South Africa from staying idle or hanging out in the streets.
He said that the youths were trained in Welding, carpentry, technical skills and education.
According to him, members of the union raised fund to train the youths in South Africa.
Ugwu cited an example of a graduate of chemical engineering who came to South Africa that benefitted from the union`s assistance.
“ An Enugu indigene and graduate of chemical engineering who came to South Africa was assisted to do training. We sponsored him to do a mini-examination which was used to do an assessment on his area of specialization.
“ He is presently teaching in a school here while preparing to do a one year interim programme to qualify him get a government work,” he said.
Ugwu said that youths new in the country are nurtured and assisted to do something useful.
The president said that after the training, some members of the union are encouraged to take the youths in their work place.
He said that the union had trained some youths on skills acquisition at home as part of their contribution to education in the state. (NAN)
