The money was disbursed under the auspices of the State Zakkat and Endowment Committee.
The Chairman of the Committee, Alhaji Lawal Maidoki, disclosed this at the commencement of the disbursement in Sokoto
He said that N90 million out of the amount was for the payment of monthly allowances to 6,923 persons with disabilities in the 23 local government areas of the state.
“Each month, the state government gives the committee N45 million and today’s is for two months.
“They payments are the arrears of December 2013 and the payment for April, 2014, as each beneficiary gets N6,500 per month.
“Each of the beneficiaries will, therefore, get N13,000 for the two months as stated earlier.”
Maidoki said that the balance of N19.5 million was given to the various sub-committees under the main committee.
According to him, the disbursement is for their various activities for the month of April.
The sub committees included those of health which got N6 million; Orphans, N2 million; accommodation, N1.5 million; as well as enlightenment and publicity which got N1.5 million.
Similarly, the investment sub-committee received N3.5 million, sub-committee for the treatment of mentally deranged persons, N2 miilon; while N3 million was set aside for the secretariat, special and emergency services.
Maidoki commended the state government for sustaining the gesture, which he said, would help in alleviating the sufferings of indigent people in the state.
He appealed to wealthy individuals in the state to complement the efforts of the state government in improving the lives of less privileged citizens.
The chairman, however, expressed disappointment that beggars were still flooding the streets of Sokoto city and its environs in spite of the state government’s gesture.
On their part, the chairmen of health and orphans sub-committees, Alhaji Nura Attajiri and Malam Sani Sagir, respectively advised the beneficiaries to use the money for the purpose it was meant for. (NAN)
