Sokoto (Sokoto State) – Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State said on Thursday that arrangements had been concluded to employ 500 teachers in the state.
Tambuwal made the plan known when he received Mr Mohammadu Muhidden, Chief of Sokoto Field Office of UNICEF, who paid him a courtesy visit in Sokoto.
According to Tambuwal, the recruitment is to address the shortfall in teaching personnel in public secondary schools in the state.
He said the State Government was fully committed to providing qualitative and sound education to its pupils.
He said the 500 teachers, when employed, would complement the efforts of the existing ones.
“In the coming days, the state government will sign a memorandum of understanding with the National Teachers Institute (NTI), to train teachers of basic education.’’

He said the administration placed top priority on the education sector so as to produce competent leaders.
Tambuwal expressed worry over the low enrollment figures of girls in schools and promised to personally lead the advocacy for girls to go to schools.
He said Sokoto had a history of producing women who had made their mark in the field of education.
He cited Nana Asmau, daughter of Sheikh Usman Danfodio and the present Chief Justice of the State, Justice Aisha Sani Dahiru, as examples.
“Nana Asmau was a scholar, a teacher and a writer. She was well-educated and authored many books on family values and other social issues.
“With regards to education, we have a certain standard set by forefathers in Sokoto. As conservative as we are, we have female as chief judge. That is good for our education.
“So, everything will be done to ensure our girls are in school. We are very determined to improve on our enrolment statistics. Both intake and quality of teaching will be adequately taken care of”, the governor said.
In his remarks, Muhiddeen urged Tambuwal to establish pre-primary classes in all primary schools in Sokoto state, as part of its commitments to basic education.
He also urged the government to increase the number of female teachers and female administrators in public schools. (NAN)
