Minister Nyesom Wike of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) disclosed on Wednesday, March 13, that certain reported kidnappings in Abuja are orchestrated.
Wike assured residents of enhanced security measures and increased infrastructure development in the nation’s capital.
Speaking to journalists after a closed-door session with senators at the National Assembly, Wike addressed concerns regarding the security of FCT residents, alongside FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh. The productive exchange with the senators highlighted improvements in FCT security, with the minister stating, “I am glad they are all happy with what we have done… Senators agreed that security has significantly improved in the FCT.”
Highlighting ongoing efforts, Wike emphasized the importance of mitigating insecurity, acknowledging that while no society is devoid of crime, the focus remains on reducing its prevalence. He cited recent arrests of notorious kidnappers, leading to a decline in abduction incidents in Abuja.
Wike also underscored internal factors contributing to some kidnapping cases, stating, “Most of the kidnapping stories you hear… are stage-managed by people… there are some internal arrangements.” Despite challenges, he assured swift action to secure the release of victims.
While recognizing the persistent threat of criminal activity, Wike affirmed the commitment to delivering the best services to FCT residents. He concluded, “We cannot give you the assurance that there will be no form of criminality… as long as we are humans.”
