Human Rights activist Omoyele Sowore has claimed that President Bola Tinubu’s government used fifteen different tactics to try and stop the EndBadGovernance protests from taking place.
Since August 1, Nigerians have been protesting against economic hardship, bad governance, and hunger, with a one-million-man march across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory set to mark the grand finale on Saturday, August 10.
On his Twitter page, the former presidential candidate listed the methods he alleges the president used, which he says failed to prevent the protests.
He tweeted:
“15 Things The TINUBU Regime USED BUT FAILED TO STOP THE #ENDBADGOVERNANCEINNIGERIA REVOLT:
- Bribing Imams and Pastors, traditional rulers, professors, SANs, NANS, social media influencers, and media with $45m
- Arresting Organizers across Nigeria
- Invoking Traditional ceremonies (Oro) and Mobilizing Cultists and thugs
- Using maximum Force by Police, Military, and DSS
- Forging Signatures of protest leaders to issue false Press Statements
- Freezing bank accounts of protest organizers
- Setting up phony groups that kept on lying that ‘they are pulling out’ of a protest they were never part of
- Getting the Chief of Defence Staff to threaten journalists not to cover the revolt
- Creating an illegal ‘WATCHLIST’ to witch-hunt Diasporan Nigerians
- Shooting teargas and live ammunition at and killing protesters
- Pushing propaganda of foreign sponsorship and alleged use of Russian flags
- Getting ridiculous court’s exparte orders to confine protesters to government-designated locations
- Promoting ethnic, sectional, and religious sentiments to divide revolting Nigerians
- Accusing the North of sabotage and betrayal
- Attempting to cause division between Yorubas and Igbos by instigating ‘IgboMustGo’
