LAFIA – The Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has commenced the training of education secretaries and desk officers on special education.
Malam Abdulkarim Abdullahi, the Executive Chairman of the board, said this on Friday in Lafia at the opening of a three-day special education capacity building workshop.
He said the training was organised for education secretaries and heads of schools to tackle the education needs of persons with disabilities in the state.
Abdullahi was represented at the occasion by the Permanent Member 3 of the board, Alhaji Yusuf Amwe.
He explained that the training was designed to ensure effective implementation of inclusive education in the state and the country at large.
“The importance of inclusive education to the development of any society cannot be over-emphasised.
“This is because education is the right of every child, whether normal or disabled, for the country to achieve speedy development.
“This training was organised for the 31 education secretaries, desk officers and other stakeholders across the state in order to tackle the education needs of persons, pupils with disabilities.
“This is part of Gov. Al-Makura’s commitment to improving the standard of education in the state,” he said. [eap_ad_2] He said the state government has trained and retrained teachers on class room management and computers, among others, for the overall development of the education sector.
“I want to urge you to use the lesson in order to train other teachers in your various local government areas in order to give special attention to the education of persons with disabilities in the state for the benefit of all,” Abdullahi said.
He restated the commitment of the board to training and retraining of teachers to improve on the standard of education in the state.
The chairman also urged parents to give adequate priority to the education of their children to complement government efforts.
Mr MuguYusuf, the Guest Speaker of the occasion, presented a paper on “The role of Education secretary and school heads in the effective implementation of inclusive education”.
He said that inclusive education is the most realistic training of children with disabilities.
Yusuf, who is a lecturer with the University of Jos, said that inclusive education would discourage discrimination and disintegration in the education of persons with disabilities.
He urged participants to take the advantage of the training to equip themselves with knowledge in order to train others on education of persons with disabilities.
He said disabled pupils need special attention, including teaching, from teachers.
Responding, Mr Aliyu Othman, a participant, who is also the Education Secretary of Kokona Local Government Council of the state, commended the board for organising the special training and called for its sustenance.
