Enugu – Two Enugu based sports enthusiasts, Obinna Okenwa and Ejike Okonu have embarked on re-awakening the game of table tennis by conducting monthly competitions of the game in the state.
Okonu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Wednesday that they decided to sponsor competitions with a view to discovering new talents.
He said that the competitions would be for all age categories and held at the Honourable Event Center, Achara Layout, Enugu every month.
According to him, we were motivated to stop the steady decline of people’s interest in other sports rather than football in the country.
“It gives me joy to take part in re-awakening the consciousness of the people of Enugu and Nigeria at large through the game of table tennis.
“Obinna Okenwa and I have been lovers of the game right from our secondary school days.
“We got worried at the lack of attention given to the game nationwide and decided to start from Enugu,” he said.
Okonu said that the first edition of the competition would hold on Sept. 25 while subsequent ones would be held on the last Sunday of every month.
“Our target is to discover budding talents that will go on to represent Enugu State and the country at major table tennis championships,” Okonu said.
He appealed to other sports loving Nigerians to assist in promoting sports in the country
