LAGOS – The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU),Lagos State University (LASU) Chapter, on Monday lauded the Lagos State Government’s directive on the institution’s authorities to approve outstanding promotion exercise.
The Chairman, Mr Saheed Oseni, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that issues bordering on the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 pending promotion exercise had been resolved.
Oseni said the decision was taken at a reconciliatory meeting involving the committee inaugurated by Gov. Babatunde Fashola, the university authorities and the leadership of the union.
“The committee was headed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Chief Fatai Olukoga,’’ he said.
According to the unionist, the meeting was attended by representatives of the Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions and the Head of Service.
The SSANU official said the LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa, led the institution’s delegation to the peace-making event.
Oseni said a communique on the decisions reached at meeting, said that the proposal on vacant positions, promotion and pyramid structure for the senior non-teaching staff, would be implemented from 2013/2014 promotion year.
He said the outstanding 63 staff due for promotion in the 2011/2012 promotion year should be promoted notionally as appropriate.
According to him the communiqué stipulated that members who complied with the union’s directive to shun the promotion exercise, conducted in 2012/2013, were pardoned.
It also said that the affected members would be allowed to participate alongside others, due in the 2013/2014 promotion exercise, based on the Vacancy Promotions and Pyramid Structure for senior non-teaching staff.
Oseni said, however, that the agreement was awaiting ratification by the Governing Council, due to meet in January 2015.
“We give Kudos to the Gov. Fashola-led administration on the issue of promotion, just as he reversed the hike in tuition fee,’’ Oseni said. (NAN)
