Lagos –  Two educationists on Thursday called for regular training of teachers especially on information technology to strengthen Nigeria’s education system.

The educationists told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the training in tertiary institutions had become insufficient for teachers to make the desired impact.

Mr Muyiwa Ashimolowo, a lecturer at the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, (AOCOED), said that regular training of teachers had become imperative as result of strikes by lecturers.

Ashimolowo said that teachers should be abreast of advancement in all aspects of education to remain relevant.

“Training got in the tertiary institution is not enough to meet the unending needs of our education system.

“That is why teachers should upgrade themselves through constant training,’’ he said.

According to Ashimolowo, regular training in information technology will help a teacher to be on top of his or her job.

Mr Simon Fowowe, Head of Department, Early Childhood Education, AOCOED, told NAN that education determined the growth of a nation.

According to him, teachers are at the centre of the growth since they groom future leaders.

He urged that teachers should update their knowledge in line with societal needs.

The lecturer said that societies would achieve more progress if the best would be inculcated into 21st century children. (NAN)
