KHARTOUM – Sudan on Friday called on South Sudan’s two conflicting parties to commit themselves to their ceasefire agreement by stopping fight and opening passages to allow assistance to the people.
“Sudan appeals once again to the two parties in the conflict in South Sudan to commit them to the May 9 agreement.
“Also to stop the cessation of hostilities deal; stop the fighting and open the passages to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected citizens,’’ the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Reports said earlier that violent clashes erupted in the oil-producing Upper Nile State between the South Sudanese government and defectors loyal to former Vice-President Riek Machar.
“South Sudan conflict has great impacts on all countries of the region, particularly Sudan, whereas the security and peace of the region are inseparable.
“No country can enjoy peace while its neighbours are suffering from war and security disorder,’’ the statement said.
The South Sudanese rivals signed an agreement in Addis Ababa on May 9, stipulating comprehensive ceasefire, and formation of a transitional government to arrange for general elections within a year from the signing of the deal. (Xinhua/NAN)
